Fireworks are No Joke for Dogs!

Fireworks are No Joke for Dogs!

I’m not sure people realize how traumatizing fireworks are for dogs.  To a dog, those loud booms and whistles sound as if the walls are coming down around them.  Their instinct is to flee and many of them do. Sedatives Help For the dog…not you!  I gave Misha a sedative for the 4th of July.  It really helped.  But, the fireworks have gone on far beyond the holiday.  They start a week before the 4th and people are still shooting…

Remember: The 4th of July is Scary for Our Pets

Fireworks terrify my dog.   My neighbors have been setting them off for a week.  I’ve been finding my dog under the bed, the desk, the dresser, behind the TV stand…anywhere she can cram her small body. It’s sad. I’ve written in the past of how I give Misha a sedative on the 4th of July to help calm her nerves.  She relaxes while World War III plays out in our neighborhood.  Without it, she runs around the house with a…

Fireworks Can Be Scary: Steps to Take to Keep My Dog Safe

Independence Day…It’s the day we celebrate our nation’s independence.  It’s a day for parties, picnics, and panic…if you’re a dog.  While we enjoy oohing and aahing at the beautiful fireworks, the loud noises are very scary to many dogs (and cats too!) Misha is terrified of them, especially the ones that make a loud booming sound.   The other night someone set one off.  The sound and vibration were so forceful I jumped from my chair, car alarms went off all…

The Yearly Veterinary Visit

The Yearly Veterinary Visit

Last Friday, Misha had to go for her annual vet visit or as I like to call it “inflict a Jack Russell upon veterinary staff day”.  Misha is terrible at the vets.  She screams…like a baby.  She growls and bites.  It’s awful. She wasn’t always like this way.  When I got her, she was a little skittish, so I worked at making the vet visits pleasant.  I wanted her to have a good relationship with the veterinary staff.  She had…

Misha Isn’t the Only Scaredy Dog

Misha Isn’t the Only Scaredy Dog

Behold Misha’s cousin, Summit.  She stayed with us last week.  Summit and Misha are two of a kind.  They are afraid of strange things. Misha tends to be afraid of things that make noise, like the aluminum foil container when you rip off a sheet.  I’m not sure what Summit’s deal is. We brought in a ladder to change the batteries on the fire alarms.  The minute the ladder was brought into the house, she ran for cover.  My brother…

Dreaded Jacket Season

Dreaded Jacket Season

Share

The last couple of days our normally springlike autumn has turned chilly and windy.  We had wind gust up around 40-50 mph on Monday.  It means this is the time of year that Misha hates the most:  Jacket Season. Our winters don’t get very cold and it never snows.  But, Misha is a small dog without a whole lot of fur.  She shivers when the temperature is below 65F.  She sleeps wrapped inside a heat reflecting blanket in the middle…
